How direct-to-garment printing works
A DTG printer applies water-based textile ink directly to the garment, much like an inkjet system engineered for fabric. The shirt may be pretreated, particularly for color printing on dark fabric, then printed and cured so the ink sets.
Because the image is prepared digitally, DTG handles gradients, fine lines, photographs and many colors without creating a separate physical screen for each color. That makes it useful for short runs and print-on-demand production.
How screen printing works
Screen printing uses a stencil on mesh to push ink onto the garment. Traditional spot-color artwork generally requires a separate screen and setup for each color. Printers align those screens so the colors register into the final design, then cure the ink.
Once setup is complete, screen printing can reproduce a design efficiently across a larger quantity. It is especially associated with strong spot colors, specialty inks and bold graphics, though experienced printers can produce highly complex work.

Which method looks better?
There is no universal winner. A watercolor illustration may suit DTG because of its gradients. A one-color wordmark across hundreds of shirts may suit screen printing. A deliberately thick specialty ink creates a different result from a soft-hand water-based print.
Evaluate whether the print supports the art. Fine text should be legible. Colors should be intentionally balanced with the garment. Edges should match the aesthetic—crisp where crispness is expected, textured where texture is part of the design. Product images should accurately represent scale and placement.
What about hand feel?
“Hand” describes how the print feels. DTG can feel integrated with the fabric, especially on light garments and art with limited solid coverage. Dark garments may need a white underbase that adds feel. Screen printing can range from very soft to noticeably raised depending on ink, additives, layers and coverage.
A large solid rectangle feels different from thin line art regardless of method. Garment fiber and surface also matter. The method label alone cannot tell you exactly how a print will feel.
Which lasts longer?
Both methods can last through repeated wear when correctly prepared, printed, cured and cared for. Durability depends on:
- ink and pretreatment compatibility with the fabric;
- correct curing time and temperature;
- art coverage and ink deposit;
- garment quality and dimensional stability;
- washing, drying and ironing habits;
- normal abrasion during use.

DTG does not require the same physical screen setup for every color, so a connected fulfillment provider can print a single customer order from a prepared digital file. That allows a store to offer multiple designs and variants without printing a large finished inventory in advance.

Is DTG better than screen printing?

Does DTG crack?
A DTG print can age or fail if production or care is poor, just as other prints can. Correct pretreatment, curing, fabric compatibility and laundering all matter.
Why does a print feel different on a dark shirt?
